Using Simpson Strong Ties in Deck Installation

Simpson Strong-Tie is a well-known brand that produces a variety of structural connectors, fasteners, and other products designed to strengthen and reinforce construction projects, including decks. When installing a deck, Simpson Strong-Tie products can be used to enhance the structural integrity and safety of the deck. Here's a general guide on how to use Simpson Strong-Ties when installing a deck:

  1. Design and Planning:

    • Before you start, make sure you have a well-thought-out deck design and a clear plan for the project. Determine the size, shape, and location of the deck.

    • If it’s a new deck, attached to an existing home, or over 30” off the ground you might need to have it design by a structural engineering. Check your local building codes and regulations to ensure you comply with any requirements.

  2. Gather Materials:

    • Purchase the necessary Simpson Strong-Tie connectors, fasteners, and other products based on your deck design and the specific needs of your project. I usually purchase mine from Dunn Lumber in Lynwood.

  3. Prepare the Site:

    • Clear the area where the deck will be installed, ensuring it's level and properly graded. See some of our videos on Instagram for examples: Dreamforge

  4. Install Footings and Posts:

    • Install concrete footings for the deck posts based on your local building codes.

    • Attach Simpson Strong-Tie post bases or post caps to securely connect the deck posts to the footings. The size in the link may not be the one you need for your build.

  5. Install Beams and Joists:

    • Attach Simpson Strong-Tie joist hangers to the beams to support the deck joists.

    • Install the beams and secure them to the posts using appropriate Simpson Strong-Tie connectors.

  6. Install Decking:

    • Lay down the deck boards on top of the joists and secure them using appropriate screws or nails. Simpson Strong-Tie offers decking fasteners that can help create a secure attachment.

  7. Railing Installation:

    • If your deck requires railings, use Simpson Strong-Tie connectors to attach railing posts to the deck structure securely.

  8. Stair Construction:

    • If your deck has stairs, utilize Simpson Strong-Tie stair connectors for added support and safety.

  9. Inspect and Secure:

    • Once the deck is fully constructed, carefully inspect all the Simpson Strong-Tie connectors and fasteners to ensure they are properly installed and secure.

  10. Maintenance:

    • Regularly inspect your deck and the Simpson Strong-Tie connectors for any signs of wear, corrosion, or damage. Replace any components that show signs of deterioration.

Remember that the specific Simpson Strong-Tie products you use will depend on your deck's design and the load-bearing requirements of your local building codes. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for the proper installation of each product, and consider consulting with a professional or local building authority if you have any doubts about your deck's structural integrity.
